Viola Davis’s Oscars acceptance speech acknowledges
the presence of God [VIDEO]

Viola Davis believes the presence of God had a big part to play in her epic role in Fences that
scored her an Academy Award for best supporting actress.

While shouting out Christian director and co-star Denzel Washington, who adapted the Broadway
script of late playwright and screenwriter August Wilson, the emotional star said, "Thank you for
putting two entities in the driving seat: August and God.”

The Emmy-winning “How to Get Away with Murder” star played long-suffering Rose Maxson
opposite Washington as her husband Troy. The powerful on-screen duo portrayed a couple
living in 1950s Pittsburgh whose marriage eventually falls apart.

The compelling role earned her trophies at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, too.

It’s been a great year so far for the 51-year-old who got her
own star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame in January. She said of that moment, “It's like my life flashing before my eyes and all I can
say is God has blessed my life in abundance.”

Thanksgiving offered to the divine giver of good gifts is part of the reason Davis is so successful.

Two years ago, she became the first black woman to win for lead actress in a drama series. Now,
with last night’s Oscar win, she became the first black woman to win an Oscar, Emmy and Tony
for acting.

Finally landing that Academy Award for the first time in three nominations, a breathless and teary-
eyed Davis clutched her statue and saluted Wilson, saying the
Fences author "exhumed and
exalted the ordinary people."

When she singled out her director Washington, while glancing down at him sitting in the front row
at the Dolby Theatre, she told him both Wilson and God “served you well."

Perhaps, what is more true, is that Washington, who was also nominated, served those two well.

The Juilliard-trained actress also thanked her parents, Dan and Mary Alice Davis, who raised her
in the impoverished town of Central Falls, Rhode Island.

"I'm so thankful that God chose you to bring me into this world," she said.

Look how far she's come.
